How to make your wedding flowers feel natural, abundant and completely personal
Flowers are never just decoration.
They shape how a day feels.
The right flowers don’t just sit in a space — they move with it, soften it, and become part of the atmosphere. They bring a sense of season, of place, and of something that feels entirely your own.
When couples come to me, they don’t always know what flowers they want — and that’s absolutely fine. In fact, it’s often better that way. My role is to guide you, to understand the feel of your day, and to translate that into something that feels natural, abundant, and completely personal.
Here’s how I approach it.
Start with the feeling, not the flowers
Before we talk about specific blooms, we look at the bigger picture.
Your venue, the light, the setting, the time of year — these all matter far more than choosing individual flowers. A Georgian manor, a countryside barn, or a garden ceremony will each call for something slightly different.
Rather than asking “What flowers do you want?”, I’ll always ask:
“How do you want your day to feel?”
Soft and romantic, wild and joyful, elegant and understated — once we understand that, the flowers naturally follow.
Let the seasons lead
One of the most beautiful ways to create that natural, effortless look is to work with what’s in season.
Spring brings that sense of newness — lighter tones, fresh textures, and those fleeting, much-loved flowers that feel like a true marker of the season. Double tulips, with their soft, almost peony-like heads, are a favourite of mine (see my Instagram posts of the beauties I have grown!), alongside the brief but always breathtaking peony season that always steals hearts.
As we move into summer, everything becomes more abundant. There’s more movement, more texture, and a looseness that feels relaxed and full of life.
Late summer into autumn is where things become richer and deeper. This is when dahlias come into their own — full of character, depth, and those incredible tones that add warmth and interest.
Working seasonally doesn’t limit your choices — it enhances them. It ensures your flowers feel right for the moment, rather than forced or out of place.
Create movement and softness
Natural florals aren’t about tight, structured arrangements.
They’re about movement — stems reaching upwards, flowers gently spilling, textures layered in a way that feels almost effortless.
Some flowers take centre stage, while others quietly support in the background, adding softness and space. It’s that balance that creates something that feels abundant without being overwhelming.
This is where the artistry really comes in — knowing how to let each element breathe while still creating impact.
Think about how your flowers live throughout the day
Your flowers shouldn’t just be designed for one moment.
I always encourage couples to think about how their flowers can move and evolve as the day unfolds. Ceremony flowers can become part of the reception, aisle meadows can be repurposed onto tables, and statement pieces can continue to frame the space long after the vows.
It’s not just about getting the most from your flowers — it’s about creating a sense of continuity, where everything feels considered and connected.
Let it reflect you, not the trends
Trends will always come and go.
But the weddings that feel the most special are the ones that reflect the couple — their style, their energy, their story.
Whether that means soft and neutral, full of colour, or something in between, the most important thing is that it feels like you. Flowers have a quiet way of expressing that, often without you even realising it.
A final thought
You don’t need to know flower names, and you don’t need a perfectly curated Pinterest board.
What matters is the feeling you want to create.
From there, everything else can be guided, shaped, and brought together in a way that feels natural, abundant, and entirely your own.
If you’re planning a wedding and want flowers that feel considered, seasonal and personal, I’d love to hear about your plans.
